For those of you who don’t know, Wood Spider plays dark, manic-depressive folk punk with heavy influence from ragtime and vaudeville. Between the five of us, we play guitar, plectrum banjo, ukulele, cello, accordion, singing saw, washboard, glockenspiel, and also stomp and hoot and holler a lot. Maybe you’d like us if you like Blackbird Raum, Mischief Brew or Tom Waits.

Hope to see you at a show!

We had a meeting two weeks ago at the Croton mansion! I was sick! Fanny dressed up like an LA chick at some point! Alex had pit stains and eventually made this shirt into a tank! Matt was about to leave for Vancouver! Mike was the same.
In any case, we came up with a lot of neat ideas for the future. The thing that makes the most sense to mention is our tour kits. We will prepare a variety of work from different Spikedriver artists into a small portfolio to give to bands about to go on tour. They’ll sell the work just as they would sell merch. Any profits will be split between artists, band and Spikedriver. Awesome, right? We think so. Get in touch if you or anyone you know is interested!
Also, keep an eye out for our introductory mega-zine featuring work, stories, recipes and music from Spikedriver artists and friends.

COLIN ALEXANDER is a designer and painter from Ridgewood, New Jersey. He currently studies at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. On this label commissioned by the Cake Life Brewing Company, Colin was tasked to create a piece that embodied nautical themes, responded to the song “Watershed” by Zona Mexicana, and responded to the beer name “Washed Up.” From this point, he worked to create a piece that illustrated the violence of the ocean on the small scale and, at the same time, its placidity as a whole. When the individual is introduced to this relationship, they are forced to acknowledge their relative insignificance, which is a shock after a lifetime of being one’s own protagonist. - http://www.cargocollective.com/foxtooth

Hey folks! Tomorrow is finally the day that we will be assembling and releasing the first batch of beers from the Cake Life Brewing Company. Each beer will have the above design printed in white ink on a clear label and be wrapped within a custom brown bag, all tied off with the download code for the new Zona Mexicana release, “Watershed.”
Spikedriver will also be tabling at the release show tomorrow evening at the Silent Barn in Brooklyn, NY! Come by, grab a beer, listen to some tunes! Otherwise, you’ll be all Washed Up. Puns.

The Act of Estimating as Worthless - Amongst These Splintered Minds // Leaden Thoughts Sing Softly
The gears are turning slowly but surely.  We began working on this project in October 2010, and we are finally almost on the home stretch.  We hopefully be finished early this fall.  The twelve songs are almost entirely tracked, and the packaging is designed, printed, and ready to be assembled.  This will be a fairly small edition, only 50-75 cassettes will be made.  We will also be printing limited runs of two silkscreen prints for this project, based on the on the drawings that were made for the album artwork.   Here you can see some photos of the process - many mock-ups, and a glimpse at the final product (the big dark blue sheet above the little booklets).  The next two or three months will be spent touching up recordings, mixing, mastering, sewing books, and folding and glueing cases.  The production is being done by Mike Ditrio, and the package design and artwork is by Matthew Van Asselt.  In the meantime, you can listen to and download 4 demo versions of songs from this release by visiting the band’s bandcamp page here: http://theactofestimatingasworthless.bandcamp.com/

mirouxruelabat asked: I'm actually from Massachusetts, but if I wasn't lame and actually had a car I would totally be down with helping you guys lol

Aw man, that is no good to hear! Definitely keep in touch!

mirouxruelabat asked: I'm really stoked to what you do for The Flaming Tsunamis vinyl. I really dig what I've seen from you guys.

Thanks!! We are just as stoked. Hopefully we’ll be posting more “making of” pictures in the coming weeks. Are you from Connecticut? We could always use some help with assembling!

Washed Up IPA late night packaging idea!

Another summer project of ours that we are so psyched to start working on!
